Hi, I have a D40 and plan to hire some exteral strobe lights for a studio shoot. How do I sync the strobe lights to my camera? Do I need a speedlight flash (SB 800)? Or will a sync cord work? Thanks

To connect studio strobes wired to a DSLR, you need a PC-sync port that the D40 doesn't have. There are, however, hotshoe adapters that lets you connect a strobe.

The units you rent might have a radio link that lets you put a transmitter in the hotshoe.

Optically syncing might work, but any TTL capable flash as a master tends to use a preflash for metering and that will set the strobes off before you want them to. Some strobes can be set to ignore the pre-flash, though.
