D500 NEF-L files not readable in Photoshop CC on iMac/Catalina

I am having a heck of a time getting D500 NEF files to open on a brand new iMac running Catalina 10.15.6.

I have Photoshop CC 2020 installed and updated, Adobe Camera RAW updated, Nikon NX-I and NX-D installed, no avail.

Photoshop says it "cannot read file format", Nikon NX-I and NX-D just show thumbnails but will not show the images themselves no matter what.

Another interesting thing is that every time I try to eject the SD card(s) I have to force eject because it says some other program is using the card. 

Been messing with this for 2 days, anyone? Help?
