Hi,

I've got about 40,000 pictures of Antarctica.

I work for a government department and in my job, I need to train all staff going to Antarctica.

During training, I use my personal pictures as reference material.

Now the problem is that it is always a struggle to find the correct pictures. I started adding keywords to them (Using Photo Mechanic) but this is a tedious process. I have tried numerous software packages, such as Lightroom, Capture One, Luminar, ACDSee, PhotoDirector, Bridge, iMatch, etc. but all seem to be more concentrating on improving or manipulating the pictures. They are all good to add a couple of keywords but they become hopeless when adding more than 10 keywords to a picture.

I have a list of Structured Keywords (Contains about 1,000 keywords in a hierarchical order and also contains synonyms and scientific names).

In Photo Mechanic my workflow is as follows:

Open a folder of all my pictures. Open the structured keyword list. Then scroll to all the categories and children. Tick a keyword and add it to the picture.

This copies all the categories, children and keywords into the picture. However, I need to do this like 10 times per picture. As you can imagine this is a very tedious process.

I am looking for software that can do the following:

-Specifically designed to improve the keywording process

-Being able to select individual keywords fast (Ideally by speech; Does that exist??)

-Being able to write the information in the IPTC keyword field so that it can be seen by multiple applications.

I am also looking for software where it will be easy to search for specific keywords.

Eg: Find all pictures including Antarctica, Mawson, machinery, crane.

Some other examples:

~Structures, Antarctic Buildings, Science building, Aeronomy

~Where, Antarctica, Antarctic, Mac Robertson Land, Mawson, Station, West Arm

~Animals, Wildlife, Undomesticated Animals, Porifera

~Geographic Features, Antarctic, Sea Ice, Polynya, Polinia

In most programs, one has to type in the keywords over and over again as they will disappear with every new search.

It would be great where one has the option, of say, 10 keyword fields that can be left populated whilst doing a new search and only be changed when required.

All the tagging software I found so far is just way too limited or too simplistic.

What are the professionals using??

All suggestions are welcome. Thank you very much in advance.

I use a much simpler approach for my archive.

I think that, if you want to go on the way you do,
a professional archivist could be of some help.

Photo Mechanic is geared towards a newspaper or magazine model for asset management. It is far from perfect for what you want to do but probably still the best on the market.

You can save a lot of work by using a combination of stars and colours to group photos that need similar sets of tags, put the tags into the Stationery, select the group and apply Stationery to the selected photos. If you then remove the star ratings and set a colour tag that means basic IPTC done before you deselect them, you have saved lots of tedious work. Remember that you can save Stationery sets.
