I'm a really newb to strobist photography but I was wondering to your thoughts on portraits where much of the face becomes very white from the external flash. To me it looks so unnatural and not the most pleasing in many cases. What do you guys think? Do you prefer to use warming filters to bring out more skin tone or do you like the look of bright white light cast on skin with skin tones in the shadows. I'm talking in general of course.

White Light in Portraits? Good or Bad?

If the face becomes too white/bright then the flash wasn't set properly. You should be able to capture someone's skin tone just as it appears.
A gold reflector can be used to warm up the face.

I like skin colour to be skin coloured. If it's turning white, turn down your lights.
