So, I own this lens for a while. I use it with Nikon D800 and to get the sharpest picture I really need to be close. Portrait filling the frame, no problem, sharp, but if I want to play with composition, put the model somewhere down, left and to make big copy space, that's where the problems begin. Sharpness is a big issue and I get one out of 20 photos perfectly sharp. That is damn awful, because I am shooting stock, and that is killing me. Anyone solved this problem?

Have you calibrated the AF fine-tune? Your lens and camera may well be within tolerance, but at different points in the acceptable range. The D800 tends to reveal even the smallest front- or backfocus, just like the modern DX bodies do.

Reikan FoCal is well worth getting as it simplifies the procedure considerably.

An AF Fine Tune is imperative as Peter mentioned.

It is not the lenses, good buddy, it's the combo.

Made with the smallest of tolerances as the cameras are, these two
are only part of a three component system that includes the AF.

Manually focus a lens and you'll get it work better than an untuned
AF. The AF really acts like an interface between them and its fine tu-
ning is imperative.
