Is an ME-1 necessary, or will almost any stereo mic work? Because mono lavalier and headset mics aren't working with it, even after adjusting manual sensitivity in movie settings. Thanks.
Here is a video that shows one young lady's solution.
AAARRRGH! Link to video won't show. She uses a Zoom H1 audio recorder (around $100) with a Rode mic plugged into it. I don't know if she has the Zoom patched into the camera's mic input but I've used mine that way.
I just found several youtube videos of folks using the D3300 with Rode stereo mics so most should work on your camera
Most DSLR internal pre-amps are not very good, often they have too much hiss when you turn up your mic input gain on the camera. Most folks solution is to run the mic signal in "hot" and keep the camera mic gain down as much as possible.
The Zoom H1 is a very good solution for very little money. I've used one, however I've moved on to a Tascam DR60D and Zoom H6. The Zoom H1 shown in the video records on micro SD cards and the Tascam and Zoom H6 both record on SD cards.
Most separate audio recorders can be plugged into the camera's mic input and that way you have some audio backup.
Sounds more complicated that it really is but the quality of audio you can get with a separate audio recorder is worth it.
Very important is mic placement. As close to the speaker as you can put it without it showing in the video.
