I got lucky lately and bought what I think is one of Nikon's finest zoom lenses, the Nikkor 80-200 f/2.8 E D (New as in the current production lens, 1997-Now).  I've only had it a few days, so photos are limited at this time, but what a gem this lens is!  It's fast, clear, zoom and focusing are internal-it doesn't change length from 80-200 or focusing, build quality is stunning, it uses traditional straight diaphragm blades which make the great sun stars I love for photographing classic cars, it should do well for portraits, and it's affordable.   I really like it!  Next maybe a Nikkor 300mm f/4 AF...

Congrats!

I hope yours is a good one as they can't be microadjusted for focus since the correction needed varies with both focal length and distance if the register distance is even slightly off. If your camera and lens match, it is a very good lens indeed.

The only problem I've had with it is sometimes the male and female coupling for the A/F drive don't engage fully, but a quick twist of the M-A/F ring brings it up and the focus is right on.

I've got the A/F drive problem figured out.  When I got the lens, my D700 was running on about a 1/4 battery charge and simply didn't have the power to move the big glass.  I've solved this by going with an EN-EL4 battery conversion in my battery grip.  Everything works fine now and battery life is much longer.
