I bought a second hand 50mm f/1.8 D lens for my D5600 knowing that it would not autofocus, but didn’t know that it does not allow the use of the exposure ring either. After using old OM lenses via adapter, which increases the crop factor, wanted to see what a manual 50mm could add to my casual nature photography. Is there a way to use the exposure ring with this type of camera, or it takes upgrading to a D7200 or above?

(While Peter is the specialist here)

Have you tried to change the aperture to the smallest one (i.e. f22 or whatever the smallest aperture is)

Set the lens to f/22 and lock the aperture ring with the little sliding lock. Now you control the aperture from the body, just like with G lenses.

I'll parrot the learned gentlemen above me wrote ^

The focal length of that 50mm on a crop sensor camera will be similar to 80mm due to the 1.5x crop factor, so bear this is mind. I own this lens myself, it's a wonderfully cheap alternative for crop sensor cameras to the usually more expensive 85mm glass for portrait photography.
