I could feel the motors in my old VR lens (70-300) working when I used it. New camera (D500) and new lens (18-300 VR) and I can't feel anything when focusing, even at the zoom max. The old lens was over 10 years old, so hoping newer designs are the reason for this. So far I have not been able to definitively tell the difference with my images, so not sure whether the feature is working or not.

There are basically no silly questions. I have no experience with older lenses, but the ones I own don't make very much noice. In fact you have to listen very carefully holding the ear near the lens.
The more noticeable effect is that you can see the stabilisation kicking in when you auto focus.

The 70-300 had a relatively large and heavy lens element that moves when the VR is active compared to most later lenses. It is not surprising if a DX lens that went into production nearly 8 years later is less noisy.

I have the AF-S 70-300 VR and it's like a tank rumbling through a battlefield when VR is active. It's more of a bother with my old D7000 than with my D610 but it's noticeable with both cameras. However, the photos it produces (even wide open) are amazing, especially when you consider it's age. And, it seems particularly well suited to the sensor in the D7000.

Thanks all for your feedback. I put my ear to the lens and I could hear it working. the 70-300 definitely does sound like a tank rumbling now!
