Hi.

I was wondering if someone may be able to advise out of my set up, which lens would be the best option of my ‘go to’ lens?

I am new to photography- and at present just want to get used to learning my equipment and composition and hopefully getting some good snaps along the way.

However I won’t always have all lens’ with me- and so I’m after advice/options on which one could just be left connected to the camera, should I just need to pick up my camera and run.

I am likely to take picture of mixed things- landscapes, people, action (I have 2 kids), flowers, architecture

I have put my set up below. Advice on the equipment I have would be great, but also If you could add one lens to my set up (funds are limited) taking into account what I have mentioned- which would it be?

Camera - Nikon D5600
Lens - Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1:1.8G
Lens - Nikon DX VR AF-S Nikkor 18-140mm 1:3.5-5.6 G ED
Lens- Nikon DX AF-S Micro Nikkor 40mm 1:2.8G

Any help greatly appreciated

Thanks

Your 18-140mm is a very nice walking around lens. I'm about to sell my D5600 but that was an all purpose lens for me.

If I was going to add a lens to your kit, it would be Nikon's AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR. It's an excellent, surprisingly light, telephoto lens. I had one for the D5600 and liked it so much, I got a second one that was dedicated to my D7500. On the D7500, it's a lens that I've found captures birds in flight quite well. In the US, these lenses can be purchased as Used items for less than $200, a bargain IMO.

The 18-140 is pretty much designed to be a DX version of an all around lens that is easy to leave on the body unless you are looking to do some more specialized shooting.

Action is very generic, however you also mentioned kids with the action.  That can be rather specialized shooting that requires different glass.  With that my mind goes to kids playing sports.  If so, indoor or outdoor?  The 70-300 or an 80-400 would work reasonably well for daytime outdoor sports.  For night sports or indoor sports, you would probably need (or want) the more expensive 70-200 due to the 2.8 aperture which will allow you to shoot in lower light.  Typically here in the US, as kids reach high school, they end up playing more games on lighted fields where the 70-200 is almost a requirement.  Of course, that is pretty much true for indoor sports at any age due to the less than perfect lighting you encounter...As Peter calls it, "available dark"...

if doing action photography you want 70-200mm F/2.8 used to keep budget down. for portraits nikon 85mm g or sigma 105mm macro do to fact you do not have to get so close with macro lens great portraits lens and action photography lens since will be at 157.5 on D5600. for landscapes you have great 18-140. with what i posted for lenses could get all three if get used gen 1 70-20mm F/2.8 and other two lens for around 2k or less but you find like me to get good lenses you have to buy used or third party tamron or sigma if have gen 2 or check to see if will work on mirrorless if go that route down the line
