Hello all, I have a D750 which I've had for almost a year now.  I have never shot video with it, but I am not interested in doing so.  I've researched "best video practices" and found that for cinematic looks you want the shutter speed to be twice the frame rate (24fps=1/48 sec.)  So today I was out practicing and noticed that I had no control over shutter speed once I turn on live view.  I'm in shutter priority.  If I switch the camera to photo mode I can control the shutter speed, if I put it in video mode I can control the shutter speed, but once I turn on live view I cannot control the shutter speed.  I've checked the other modes and they work fine; Aperture priority mode I can turn the front command dial and the aperture changes.  But again, shutter priority, turn on live view, shutter speed cannot be changed with any command dial and as I pan around a scene the only thing that changes is the ISO.  More information: I have Auto ISO movie mode ON with sensitivity set to 100 and max set to 5000.

I'm thinking this is an internal fault and will have to send the camera off for repair but I wanted to try this forum first.  I have searched like crazy but they only seem to bring up "how to use shutter speed" basics :-(  One more note: I put the camera in photo mode and activated live view and shutter priority mode works perfect.  Just not when I'm trying to shoot a video.

Thanks for any advice you can give me on this and sorry for the long post but I wanted to try and give all the pertinent details to help in the troubleshooting process.

I am a very rare user of the video mode, so I might miss something here, but I don’t understand why you want to control the shutter speed in video mode.
A video has a set number of frames per second to make the moving scene look smooth in transition - so why would you like to change the eposure time of individual frames?
But, as already mentioned, I am not an expert here andmay have misunderstood what you are looking for.

The one type of « videos » where shutterspeed plays a definite role is TIMELAPSE videos. But this is not related to the videomode of your camera.
For timelapse videos you will continue to work in the usual photo mode, but activate the timelapse function in the related menu of your camera to choose the total number of exposures, interval, etc. . The different exposures will then be combined in a single video output.
But for timelapse videos you will not want 24fps, but rather 1 frame per couple of seconds or full minute (others are more expert here). Having a shorter shutterspeed than the interval between two exposures will allow for the buffer not to fill, as well as process low light captures, before adding to the videostream.

I too am a very rare shooter of video, thus my problem.  The reason I need to control the shutter speed is called the 180 degree rule and it deals with recording scenes the way the human eye sees them.  As I mentioned in my post the general rule is to set your shutter speed to twice the frame rate.  I am trying to shoot at 24fps so I need my shutter speed at 1/48 sec. or 1/50 for the D750.

I believe there are a variety of video modes you can select that allow different frame rates, but it would be through selecting that mode and not through using shutter priority.  It is likely somewhere in your menu system under Video - the manual should tell you how to set / select your desired option.

So I just got off the phone with Nikon and apparently the D750 in video mode, shutter priority acts exactly like programmed mode and nothing can be changed.  Seems a little ridiculous to me but it is what it is and it looks like I will be shooting my videos in full manual mode.

The video modes in any Nikon are a strange bunch of settings. They seem to have got many things wrong in the D90 and making them work right for the user’s needs probably involves a loss of face for somebody up high.

I really don't think video has ever been a high priority at Nikon. It's always seemed like something they were forced by the market to do and they have only recently made an half serious attempt to implement. Unfortunately, they are still hampered by their previous design decisions and are understandably reluctant to start over and get it right.

Canon, on the other hand, has been in pro and semi pro video for decades so getting it at least half right in their DSLR's was a bit easier.
