Hello, All. I find myself becoming more interested in micro photography. Does anyone have any suggestions for a tripod that allows the camera to get really close to ground level? I have a tripod on which the center column can be inverted but it is a pain in the colo-rectal section to use a camera when it is upside down...

Get a 3/8-16 UNC screw, a 3/8 drill bit and a 3/8-16 tap with the corresponding drill bit. Drill and tap a hole in a piece of 3/8x1¹/₂" or larger aluminium bar stock (preferably 6063 or better) and drill a 3/8" hole so you can position your head upright with room for the camera beside the inverted column. The cantilever the cross bar gives is not ideal, but it should work and get you low.

My Sirui N-3204X Carbon Fiber tripod has an interchangeable two piece center column that allows a working height of a little less than 6 inches. Unfortunately, it's been discontinued but I'm sure there are newer models that have the same feature.

I use to use a Benbo from England. Very versatile for micro shots.

The Benbos were great... I haven't seen one since the Swedish distributor dropped the brand some years ago.

 

Another way to solve the upside-down camera problem is to use an L-plate with the QR vertical.

here good tip find true local camera store and try out tripods and monopod out. you see which one fits the needs you want and always get to have more weight then need since never know if will have heaver setup later.

Manfrotto has some tripods where you can reverse the mount so it is down, which could be handy for Macro shots.
