My friend has a Nikon D3200 with a 18-55mm lens ..It was working then suddenly she got the error message . She has done the usual checks CLEAN contacts on lens/camera... Taken battery out and put back in but with no result any ideas . Unfortunately she only has 1 lens .

Heavy lenses can put some stress on the mount on the camera, especially on the light weight D3xxx/D5xx bodies - the 18-55 should not do so.
Still it can happen that there was a shock or the screws became loose and whereby the electrical contact is no longer guaranteed. Therefore I would check the mount whether it is a bit loose.
Finally there is also the possible problem of an electrical problem, where a board on either the camera or the lens is interrupted.
Maybe you want to allow your friend test her camera with one of your lenses to identify whether the problem is with the lens or the camera.

Or test the other direction...the lens on your camera...getting a photo shop to try the lens on one of their bodies or the other direction might work but a friend is the best bet...
