Just returned from trying to photograph the meteor shower, no great shots.

Here's the issue: the D5100 works fine at home when I set it up for 30 sec. exposures @ f1.8, intervals of 30 sec.  When I get to the field and try to set it up for interval timer shooting, I get the message "this function not available with current settings."   Now that I am back home, it works fine.

anyone have any idea what I am missing here?

Might you have paused the interval timer instead of stopping it after you  tried it at home? If it is running, even if paused, you can't change settings or start it from the beginning. I think that one bit me one of the first times I tried the interval timer in my D300, but it was many years ago...

It appears that you nailed it.  I tried interrupting the sequence and beginning again.  The message appeared.  I removed the battery and rebooted, tried again and it worked fine.

Wish Nikon would have a more definitive message.

Thanks
