Am I missing something? I am playing around with the A setting on my new camera and I seem to be limited as far as what setting I can achieve. The range goes from 3.4 to 8. Is this a limitation of the camera?

I am not sure I understand your question, but I will see if I can help with what I believe you are asking. The A1000 lens is a variable aperture lens. That means that the lens is f3.4 at the widest angle of the zoom and varies to f6.9 at the telephoto end. That reflects the widest opening for the aperture as the lens was designed. If you are set on aperture preferred (A) and select the widest choice for the aperture, you will see it vary based on how closely you have zoomed in. If you were outside with sunlight and selected, as an example f11 for your aperture. you would not see it change as you zoom..

What you're observing - the fstop range of 3.4 to 8 - is indeed the limit of the A1000.
