I am looking to get into the Nikon line.  We are enthusiast with a bigger budget.  We own a cheer gym and shoot some action as well as portrait shots.  I also would like to shoot landscape shots.

HELP...... which camera should I get?

If you can go the D850 way then do it…
I use it even for action and wildlife.

If it were my choice I would get a D850.

Seriously, there's no contest. The D-850 is the better camera of the two.

It is an interesting question, but I would give a bit more differentiated advice.

You mention that you get into the Nikon line. Therefore my first question is about the camera that you have used up to now?

While the D850 is in a number of points (ergonomics, AF, ...) the better choice between the two models, it depends on whether you want to use the camera as an enthusiast who wants a couple of excellent pictures (then go for the D780) or as someone who wants to make it a serious hobby/has professional photographic needs (then go for the D850).
Also the D850 is more demanding in mastering it, than the D780.

You mention that you want to shoot some action, portrait and landscape shots.
For the action shots the better AF of the D850 can be useful, while the D780 is also well equiped.
For portraits you might prefer the rendering of the more recent processor and the larger pixels of the D780.
For being able to zoom into the details of a landscape, the 46MP of the D850 gives you extra possibilities.

To me there is no black and white distinction between the two.
I own a D610 (which could be seen as a predecessor of the D780) and a D850. I use both, depending on the picture I am looking after.

A final consideration should be that the camerabody is only half of the consideration (and budget), as the second part is about lenses.

i would take D850 over D780. since D700 series body's are intermediate. the D850 D500 and D5 are gold stander for camera to own if can or money no object.

I would definitely choose the D850 but as Jerry indicated, that may not be the best choice.  Most people would probably be quite happy with the D780 or even the earlier D750 for what you have indicated.  That will leave you some extra funds to spend on quality lenses.

The choice would depend on your experience level. The learning curve for the Nikon Pro UI is much steeper than for the prosumer bodies. Remember that you need top of the line lenses to get much benefit from the higher resolution of the D850.

What about a middle ground: D810?
