In my transition from film to digital I've learned to check with those who know rather than throwing money at something I don't have hands on experience with.

I copied a lot of old photos for folks who wanted pictures to share with friends and family and had no negative with a bellows between my camera and lens using a cable release.  Since DSLR's don't have that provision I've been using the timer, but find it clumsy at best.  I think a remote would be my best option.  Would I be better off with a radio remote or IR?

Why not get an MC-30 for your D700? If that feels like too much money, by all means get a third-party copy...

The nice thing about a wired remote like this is that there are no extra batteries to charge.

I think that's what I'm looking for.  Not out of line in price either.  Thanks once again, Peter!

The wired remote for D5xxx and D7xxx is the MC-DC2.

Thanks again, I ran across an IR remote cheap for the D5500 and ordered an NC-30 for the D700.  Total bill, under $40.00 USD.

I got the MC-30 on my D700 and it works great, even much better than a release cable did with my film cameras.  Thanks again, Peter!
