Hi there, I just upgraded from my d3400 to the D750. I love the camera but finding it is under exposing my outdoor landscape pictures by a lot.

Today I did a test with my old d3400 and the d750. Same aperture, same ISO, same metering (matrix) and same same shutter speed. How is it that the d3400 picture looks more exposed and the d750 with the same settings looks under exposed? Both shot with Standard picture. It seems like the d750 is half a stop less than the d3400 and yet settings are all the same.

I have attached two images for you to compare both at 6.3 ap, 1/60th sec, ISO 100, Matrix metering, same focus point.

Would appreciate some help!

Thanks

Did you check exposure compensation on each of the bodies?

Are the images with the same lens?

Which lens?

Were they shot in manual with AutoISO off?

If not Manual or with AutoISO, did you confirm the EXIF information to be sure they used the same settings?

Hi there. Both were not using exp compensation... however yes different lens which i thought would not necessarily make a difference. The d3400 is using Nikon DX18-140mm and the D750 is using the FX 24-120mm. They were both shot in Aperture mode with auto ISO on, however the ISO is at 100 on both pictures with the same shutter speed and aperture...

I prefer by far the second reading. Protecting the higher keys
at all cost is a must in my book.

The sky of the first had no details and the lower keys have lots
of captured information… just a little shadow recovery is needed.

The D750 shot is the better exposed. Over-exposed parts contain no information and can't be recovered.

The f-stop is the same, but light transmission is another matter. If you factor in tolerances in the actual aperture opening in the different lenses and the ISO values in the cameras and they stack up in the same direction you get this result.

I dont think you have a problem with the 750 the 3400 due to its place in the market is designed to give you an acceptable image with low or no input from you,the 750 is a pro tool which could need its settings tweaking by you to give the results you want.

I agree with the others. The D750 image is better exposed across the range. You have acceptable shadow detail without blown out highlights in the clouds.
