I have a question concerning my next(second) lens choice. I recently acquired a used D70 and a 55-200MM lens. Now I want to get one more to round out the lenses I have.

I'm thinking of getting a 50MM 1.8f, but are there any other lenses I should be considering? Such as a 18-55 MM or some other lens.

I’m open to all suggestions

TIA

Jeff

I would definitely get a good, or at least decent, walk-around zoom before getting into primes. The 18-55 or 18-70 kit zooms work really well and are cheap. Another option is a 17-50 f/2.8 third-party lens from Sigma or Tamron. If you have a slightly larger lens budget, a used 16-85 is one of the better normal zooms, even if the 16-80 is even better.

If you decide on an 18-55, stay away from the AF-P versions, the AF won't work on old cameras.

Your crop factor with the 55-200mm lens comes out to 82.5-350mm which covers portrait to telephoto.  Used 18-55mm Nikon kit lenses such as the DX VR Nikkor AF-S 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6GII are pretty sharp, plentiful, and inexpensive.  Right now Used Photo Pro in Indiana (used division of Robert's Camera) has 13 of these in stock, all excellent condition priced at $56.00 + tax and I think free shipping.  This is the lens that came with my D5500 and it is a good sharp and capable lens.  If my memory is working right now, Nikon's list price on these is in the $200.00 range.

I'm with Peter on this. Get a wide to normal zoom. I  would recommend Sigma 17-50 over the Nikons 16-85 any day. It's better built.

Thanks for the replies.. I'll keep them in mind when I make my next lens purchase.
