I have just purchased another Nikon camera, a D80 that's been converted with a 720 nm filter for Infrared photography.

Thought I'd like a go at it. I have a Nikon 18-55mm DX fitted on it.

I remember years back somewhere else that a Nikon 50mm E series f1.8 lens with the metal centre ring that has the Red dot was good for IR photography and mentioned something about the red dot with IR? Getting old and can't remember now. Hoping someone may enlighten me.

Thank You

The 50/1.8 Ai is easier to use with red dot refocusing as the throw is longer. It has the same coatings and the same lack of hot spots with IR.

The early Series E works just like the chrome ring version.

The red dot is for adjusting the focus for the wavelengths in the IR spectrum. You focus as usual and then you adjust the focus ring so that the value that was at the normal line is at the red dot instead.
