This might be the dumbest question ever but I purchased this lands for my D 5300. I'm going from the 18 to 55 mm kitlands to the 17 to 55 mm 2.8 lens. When I 1st put it on the camera I took a picture inside in relatively low light with it wide open and was surprised at the settings that the picture was extremely dark. I then placed the kitlands back on the camera at the same settings and the picture was exactly the same. I bought this lens used from adarama camera. I don't know if there is such a thing as putting different glass in a use lands or I may be completely off base. Shouldn't there be a different in exposure on the same setting between those 2 lenses? I guess I imagined it would be a noticeable difference. I've only got to use the lands for one day so far and in general the pictures seem extremely sharp and nice but this 1 issue is confusing me. Thank you for any responses in advance

Hello,

The 2.8 is the maximum aperture (i.e. the widest the aperture can open); with this lens the 2.8 is available for the full range of the focal lengths it covers.

The 18-55 has a variable aperture of 3.5-5.6 (i.e. at 18mm it has a max aperture of 3.5 and at 55mm a max aperture of 5.6).

Both lenses also have other than the max aperture. (6.3, ...)

If your settings are the same for aperture & exposure time & ISO, the capture will be exposed with the same amount of light and will therefore look darkwise the same.

Supposing that you use the max aperture and the picture is taken at 18mm the max aperture difference is 2.8 to 3.5 for the two lenses, which is very little. If you take it at 55 and both exposure time and ISO being the same, you might see a difference.

However to fully answer your question, it would be best to have both captures and the related EXIF information.

Also, to answer another of your questions: No, used lenses don’t have other glass than new ...

And finally: beyond the difference in max aperture (which will help also autofocussing at low light, as autofocussing is done at max aperture) there will be other quality differences that you will see at pictures taken at good light conditions.
