Mounting a 50mm lens backwards to your SLR was a common form of macro photography back in the film days. No tape and boards; all you had to do was get a reversing ring that was the size of your filter thread. There was no focusing, so you'd have to wing it. I tried it a few times, but never liked the results. I preferred extension tubes.

He did very well with basic, cost effective equipment!

These are amazing shots.  Something for me to try with a regular macro lens, perhaps?

I would try it, if we had any snow here where I live.

Fat chance of that.

Okay, since we got about a foot and a half of snow yesterday, I gave this a try.  Verdict: it is harder than it looks.  My background was a piece of black felt, but when I looked at the shots, the tiny fibres in the felt were too shiny.  Not sure if I got a usable picture, but I'll try again.

Or you could just shoot sand instead of snow...

I think the images are cracking, however, got to ask the question: is it possible to obtain similar results using other more conventinial means that don't involve wrapping lenses up with gaffer tape?

great photos, I would be interesed to see anyone do the same with a standard Macro lens, I dont think it would get you in close enough for that kind of detail.

K-9, are the reversing rings still available? if so do you think this would work with modern dslr's and a good zoom lens?

I was wondering if this real or not, but the responses I guess it is.  Amazing.

I saw this post the other day and it is stunning what has been managed. It's so much harder than it looks. Will keep trying though.

I tried again, and am getting closer.  I think he must do quite a bit in post-processing.  I need to figure out layer stacking . . .

This is as close as I got with a tokina 100mm macro on our D50.  I don't think I got the focus 100% right, and the exposure may be a bit off.
Going to try shooting it on a piece of glass outdoors next snow we get.
Might order some extension tubes too, see if I can get in a bit closer, and maybe photoshop to do some post processing...and I thought Scuba was an expensive hobby.....

I really think extension tubes is the way to go.

I'm in FL so this whole project is out for me.

Here's a link to an interesting article with stunning images.  It seems that focus stacking is key, and unfortunately, I have no idea how to do that.
