I'm still trying to find a way to do this (and I am in Utah with plenty of snow, sorry alden!). It would help if I had a macro lens, ha ha!

I saw the first set of images from that Russian photographer last winter, only I didn't realize he did it with a stinkin' dang P&S and gaffer tape!!!!! That makes it all the more amazing.

I'm also glad that no one here said the images were fake. Sheesh. Last winter one whole Facebook post about that first set became nothing but a back and forth between hundreds of naysayers and yeasayers. :) Urgh. Photoshop is fabulous, but it has made us all into such cynical skeptics.

All right, I've posted this in the gallery, but this is my first edited shot:

Wow! Great work, PrettyCranium!

I love the detail and would be interested in knowing your set-up.

I agree, the PrettyCranium photo is very nice.  Well done!

A friend in my photo club has been fairly successful with shooting a normal lens plus a regular handheld magnifying glass.  I haven't tried it but I'm sure it involves a good deal of experimentation.  And a steady hand with the magnifying glass.

Wow, it must be hard to shoot through a magnifying glass!

I used a 105mm macro lens (Nikkor).  The snowflake was stuck to the glass of my patio door and my sister lit it with an LED flashlight from an angle -- super technical!

Here's another one:

The way he capture the crystalline quality of the snow flakes is astounding. Congratulations on a job well done!
