Hi Everyone,

I'm thinking of buying a wide angle lens for my D3200. The Nikon 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED AF-S DX looks great but is very expensive (about 900 USD in Switzerland, see https://www.interdis...--p0000331065.)

On the other hand I've seen the AF-P DX NIKKOR 10-20mm f/4.5-5.6G VR which is not compatible with the D3200 but sells for only 239 CHF (about 240 USD, Boutique en ligne Fust pour électronique grand public et ménage, cuisines & salles de bains). Ditching the D3200 and upgrading to the D3500 would cost about 300 CHF (see https://www.fust.ch/...-8384589.html).

So it seems that upgrading my camera and getting the AF-P DX NIKKOR 10-20mm f/4.5-5.6G VR would be MUCH CHEAPER (about 240+300=540 USD) than buying the same corresponding lens for my D3200 (900 USD).

This sounds a bit crazy to me, so I just want to make sure I have everything right. Sorry if this is very basic, I'm pretty new to this and this is my first post to the forum!

Thanks in advance!

First of all, welcome to the forums!

The AF-S 10-24 uses ED glass and aspherical elements to minimize CA, that is why it is more expensive.

There is a third option, you can get either the 11-16 or the 11-20 Tokina f/2.8 lens. The 11-20 is slightly improved, but the older 11-16 still holds up well and is a bit cheaper.

I have been using (and am stil doing on DX) the Sigma 10-20/3.5 and am quite happy with the results.

Just another option ... ;)

Thanks a lot for the comments and suggestions. That's very helpful. Is there any reason to prefer the Nikon-made lenses over the third-party equivalents (Sigma, Tokina,..)? Is the quality of the Nikkor lenses objectively better?

The AF-S Nikkor has lower distortion and less CA than the third-party lenses. Both these aspects of a lower quality lens are easy to correct in post using any decent software and all the third-party lenses mentioned so far are about as sharp as the Nikkors.
