Under/overexposure not allowed in video mode on D3100?

No matter how extreme my settings are, the exposure always seems to be perfectly balanced in video mode. I know that sounds nice... I just want to make sure nothing is wrong with my camera because I cannot over/underexpose no matter how hard I try. I can make images pitch black and such in photo mode. Is it because it's an entry-level camera?
