When I take portraits using my Nikon D7100 and SB700 Flash there are shadows around the figures in the image when I download. What can I do to eliminate this.

That is typical of OBF — on board flash. Two solutions:

1, work OBF — on board flash — with softbox

2, work OCF — off camera flash with diffusion (my fav!)

Either an extra flash to light the background, a longer distance between subject and wall or a combination of the two.

The shadows would be less visible if you raise the flash higher and use a reflector to lighten the shadows from the chin that will appear on the neck.

Everything gets better if you use the flash off-camera with a good softbox or a shoot-through umbrella to get a larger light source and diffused light.

You can come a long way just using a diffuser and pointing the flash towards the ceiling (amateurs choise). If you want a more professional approach, listen to the previous posters
