It's been quite some time since I used my SB900 on my D7000 . Today I went to photograph my grandson blowing out the candles on his birthday cake and when I pressed the shutter release the SB900 emitted 3 weak flashes before the main flash captured the image. Of course I missed the moment!

I went through the menus on the camera to see if everything is as it should be and couldn't find anything wrong. Could it be a problem with the flash or am I missing something simple?

Do you have red-eye reduction active?

If I have I can't find out how to deactivate it, assuming it would be in the camera body menus. I always thought that the red-eye reduction light was on the front of the camera body and not from the speedlight.

I have the supplied de-fuser over the speedlight and it pointing to the ceiling. Why 3 flashes when one would be enough. It gives an unacceptable delay of around 2 seconds from pressing the shutter release. Will need to go into my attic to find the flash manual.

Hi Nikonian

Yes you were spot on regarding the red eye reduction. I've not used the camera for over 3 years for various reasons and am completely rusty in its use. Couldn't find it in the menus because it's not there  .... doh!!!!
