Can anyone recommend a 20mm lens for my D3500?  I recently upgraded from a D50 and my Nikon 20mm AF lens isn't compatible.

Either the AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED or the Sigma 20mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Nikon F should work on your D3500. If you want to use your older 20mm AF lens you could return the D3500 and get one of the D7xxx bodies. Either way you choose you'll be spending about the same amount of money to use a 20mm lens

Anyone know if the D7100 would work with my 20mm Nikon AF lens?

Yes, it should.  The D7100 will work with just about any Nikon lens from AIS on up. What is the complete nomenclature of your 20mm lens?

If it is the AF 20/2.8 D version, it will work fully, if a bit noisy when focusing, just like it did on the D50. If it is the earlier version without the D chip, it will work well for available light or manual flash work, but iTTL is more reliable with D versions as the camera can use the distance information to fine-tune the flash exposure..

The D7100 works with any Nikon lens from the Ai era onwards. If you want to use an earlier lens from before 1977, it will have to be converted to Ai specifications using a conversion kit, milling the original aperture ring or filing the original ring.

If you have an older manual focus 20mm Nikon lens, you might check in with John White to see if it can be modified for the newer camera.

If it is the AF version of the lens, it should work with Manual Focus, and with the camera's meter.

From the Website: "

  • Type B conversion: $35 per lens (same as a Type A conversion but with additional work so that the lenses can also be mounted on the “Electronic Only” bodies such as the N80, D100, D70, D70s, D50, D80 and D90)

  • For my former customers, the upgrade from Type A to B is $10 per lens"

$35 for a conversion is a lot less than $700 for a new lens. A 20mm lens: AF is not as critical.
