I have a D610. If I set the F stop to F8 or higher and enter live view the screen is too dark to view. if I turn off live view and open the lens to say F5,6 or lower and go into live view the screen is bright. If I then move the F stop to any smaller opening the screen stays bright. I tried it with other lenses and the problem persists. I sent Nikon service a message about this but never received a response.

This is normal behaviour.

Indeed the camera shows you the result of teh exposure with the current aperture setting. If you want to see it « live », switch your camera to « A » mode, go to Liveview and start changing the Aperture (you don`t need to switch Liveview on and off). Large aperture openings (small values) will show brighter pictures than when the aperture is closed down.

This feature Is corresponding to what you can see when using the Viewfinder and then pressing the button next to the lens on the side of the grip. Here the camera also shows what the current aperture will allow for light to pass, as well as DoF.
