Hi!

I just started to learn the Nikon D90. Contrary to what most of you would probably suggest, for the first month, 'cause I am 76 yo, I am going to take pictures using the Auto Shooting Mode.

For this purpose, do I have to bother with the Fn Button?

Thanks!

Dr. T

That is an open function button. Open in the sense that YOU
may assign which of the possible options it will take over.

No don't bother. Start using your camera. If you along the way find that you are changing a setting frequently that can be assigned to the button, make it then.

On my 4 cameras, some were assigned to
trigger the virtual horizon for example.

The Auto mode the OP hopes will ease the pains of getting to know a DSLR.

Don't bother looking for it on your pro and prosumer bodies, it only exists on the D7xxx/D80/D90 downwards models.

Yes, with Auto the camera effectively makes all decisions for you.  And it doesn't do a bad job for the basic shots and it does make it easy.  Had it on some of my former DSLR bodies and used to have my wife use it when she wanted to take some photos and I wasn't there to set things...
