Two reasons.

1. It doubles your battery life. The camera uses up the juice in the grip batteries first, then switches over to the battery pack in the camera body itself.

2. It gives you double the available area to hold on to, and it allows you to shoot vertically without twisting your hand/wrist/arm around.

Plus, it looks cool. It makes your camera look like a D4!

One of the things I have been impressed with is the battery life of Nikon batteries. But the holding area appears to be a positive benefit, although it makes it that bit more difficult to stow away in a camera bag!

I had to adjust my camera bag to accomodate the larger size of it. Not that difficult to do, really. This is the one I got. I think they may actually make this same grip for Nikon, but this is about 1/4 the price. It matches the finish and fits perfectly and functions perfectly as well.

Alden covered it perfectly. 2nd battery attached so no need to change it (though I've yet to have a problem with the battery life) and the ability to shoot vertically with more ease. I also think it would give the D600 (which I have) a little more bulk and feel more like the D800 as well. Plus it makes you look more professional. :-D

I've used the grips for years on various bodies and love them.  When I got my first D600, the grip was to arrive about 2 weeks after the body.  I don't have big hands, but in shooting the D600 without the grip, my hand started cramping a little over half way through the games.  Hasn't happened again since the grip arrived...So, there are obvious benefits to me that I didn't even anticipate nor had I noticed prior to this "problem".  When I picked up my second D600, I made sure to get both at the same time :)
