Hi All

New member but long time Nikon user.

I recently bought a Nikomat FT2 from a Japanese seller.

Body is in pristine condition, but having an issue with the shutter.  As fas as I can determine, the shutter opens and closes correctly and the speeds seem correct.  Problem is when I activate the shutter, the mirror flips up but does not return when the shutter closes. I can get the mirror down by sticking a finger in and gently pressing down on the levers in front of the shutter curtain (not recommended obviously, but it works!)

For the price I paid, it's not worth returning it, but I would like to get it sorted if possible as a backup for my FM3A.

Anyone have any ideas as to a possible fix?

Regards

Tim

Had a similar issue witha Yashica FX-2, had it it CLA'd in the end. If you are adroit enough the mechanism needs lubrication, otherwise get a pro to do it.

Check the foam at the top of the mirror box, that dampens the mirror as it swings up. This often gets like glue. If so- carefully remove it using alcohol, or even just scraping it off. Replace with a foam rubber strip with adhesive backing. I get foam sheets at Walmart's craft department and cut them.
