When I shoot in bright sunlight, I have some strange artifacts showing up in my bokeh.  As the sun goes down, they stop appearing.

Please take a look at these shots and let me know if you have any ideas ..

Using a D5 with a 400MM Nikkor lens.

Thanks,

Hi and welcome Gordon,

I believe these may be sharpening artefacts…
try if reducing it could resolves your issue. The
histogram is not really of any help in this case.

It could be convecting air possibly.

A third possibility is VR artefacts if you had VR on at such a short shutter speed.

I could not have come up with that
as I never use VR!

I would not be using VR at that speed either...actually I don't ever have it on when shooting sports...
