Just  a quick question - does D-Lighting work on RAW or JPEG image data.

More precisely - does it lift the shadows before it converts the image to JPG or after.

Why im asking that - my Pentax camera had a similar option but it only works after it processes the image to JPG so it seemed useless to use it. Does Nikon do it the right way? :)

I suppose it does it in the conversion to jpg as it doesn't show the noise in the lifted shadows I would expect if it was processed on an 8-bit image.

The D-lighting settings are in the makernotes in the NEF as it is applied non-destructively if you process the raw file in Capture NX-D but not at all in third-party raw converters.

BTW... D-Lighting does (or can) have an impact on exposure, which does affect RAW images, but the result is fairly minor.
