If this isn't in the right section, apologies.

I am having a weird issue with my D7100 that I have owned now for 6 years.

I am relatively new to long exposure photography and want to set it up for shooting photos over a long time period over night.  I purchased a Tether Tools relay and power adapter and received both on Thursday.  With the camera off I removed the battery, inserted the power adapter, routed the cable through the rubber-ish door adjacent to the battery door and closed the regular battery door.  I then connected the relay itself into the wire coming from the power adapter and the camera did not display the number of photos that it normally would when a regular battery is plugged into the camera, but it is off.  I let the relay itself charge for 4 hours using a 3.4A USB plug but it did not work, the light just stayed red (it never changed to yellow or green).  Even when I have the relay plugged into the charging block and the camera plugged into the relay it still does not show the number of photos.  I even tried this again with my battery grip plugged into the bottom of the camera, but no dice.  I do have a RAVPower 20100 Mah power supply that I have tried to plug in to help with both the grip and without but no dice.

That being said, I have a few questions.

1.  Do I need to upgrade the firmware?  I currently have v1.0 (never been updated, I know)

2.  Do I have a bad relay?

3.  Do I have a bad power adapter?

4.  Can anyone who has tried this give me some helpful hints?

Any help is really appreciated.  In a month I am going to be about 100 miles out of Denver taking night shots of the Milky Way and the spin of the stars.

Thanks.

David
