I recently purchased a used S9300.  I like it so far.

It did not come with any cables.  I downloaded a user manual and have found the proper cable on Amazon.  The User Manual indicates that the Nikon software is required to download pics to my Apple laptop???  I prefer to download to my existing Pictures program.  Other places indicate trying to download directly will lock up the computer.

Any words of wisdom, PLEASE??

I don't know about Apple products, pc you just use a USB cable and it will see the card, no software required. It would be worth a try with the Apple, not sure of you fear of locking it up... pc lockup all the time. You may have to do a Force shut down, which is not a good thing as it could cause damage to the file system and result in the pc not booting, so do at your on risk. Saying that, I will say I work with pc on a daily basis and have had to force many down and had very few to have major problem from it. A Apple may be totally different so you will have to decide that one.

It was compatible with iPhoto, so should work with Photos as well.

Why do you need the cable? Does your mac not have an SD card reader?

The new ones don't... just buy an external reader.

Internal or External the important piece for the original poster is to use a card reader and not the camera.  It is the best option.
