i recently bought a second hand Nikon AF-S 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED DX lens although the auto focus works whilst the lens was zooming in and out searching for focus each time it changes direction there is a clunk noise.

I was not happy with this so i returned the lens for a replacement

The replacement has arrived and it has exactly the same problem (if it is a problem)

all of the other lenses I have with silent wave motor autofocus do not make any noise when changing direction.

Is this clunking normal

Something else that concerns me about this lens
.I was using it yesterday and when I switched om my camera this morning I got the err message
I removed the lens wiped the contacts with a cloth and replaced the lens which seemed to cure the problem.
As the lens had not been removed from the camera how did err occur
is this a sign something is not right with this lens
