I heard that Adobe Lightroom for Android was totally free. Downloaded it and began selecting files for editing (very slow process by the way). I opened one of my RAW images and chose an editing tool.

 

But wait!

 

That immediately takes you to a window with UPGRADE NOW at the bottom of the screen. Click there and it asks you to add a payment method. So much for a free app.

 

 

Yeah I know... this is Adobe, but the whole thing seems like a scam, You can load and edit JPEG files for free, but when you go to save your edits, that process is also extremely slow. My other mobile editing apps load, edit and save images in a snap.

I believe it is included if you have their subscription for Lightroom / PhotoShop.  I have used it but it has been awhile.  I mostly edit on my MacBook and it is possible to share between the two devices.

The update itself is free, but the license is included in the Photography plan.

For what it's worth, Adobe has been monkeying around with what's included in their Photography Plan lately. The Lightroom PC/Mac CC app apparently is no longer included with the plan. When I first signed up, you could use both the CC app and the desktop application together but apparently, no longer. They're selling the CC app (along with 1TB of cloud storage) for $19.99US a month. You can still get the Photography Plan which includes Photoshop, Lightroom Classic and 20GB of cloud storage for $9.99US per month. Note that Lightroom Classic is no longer listed as a CC app although it's available on most CC plans. Confused yet? Well, there's more.

 

The mobile versions of Lightroom used to be part of the Photography Plan as well, but as you've found they can be frustrating to use. The last time I attempted to use Lightroom on my iPhone I eventually gave up in disgust. I was later told by someone that logging out and back in solves some of the usability issues. Oh, really!!! I later deleted it completely from my device. Not worth the hassle.

 

Yes, I realize that this doesn't help when you're trying to use an app that's advertised as being 'Free'. From what I understand about that... again from others who have struggled with Adobe... is that you MUST create an Adobe ID to use the software. In the past doing that did not require a purchase of anything. Perhaps that has changed as well.

 

So, my advice... assuming you want a FREE option, is to look for another app. There used to be a bunch of them on both Apple's app store and Google Play.

I have this question as well regarding programs for RAW file editing. I have learned that of Lightroom for taking you
to the Upgrade section. I am not there as yet for a paid option.

I am using Lightroom, Snapseed, and LightX currently, but not for RAW file editing. I set my Nikon D90 for RAW+JPEG and upload the JPEG files for editing at their maximum image quality.

I am still doing research and checking in here for the support. I do all my editing on my Moto E5 phone because my laptop (Lenovo IdeaPad) has no room (came with 2GB), so an upgrade is needed.

I have uploaded RAW files on my phone (Google Photo), but the are blank (white) and cannot be opened by some of the editing programs I have, but one: LightX. Of course, I am taken to the upgrade section first. I am able to view and edit a photo and the saving options are PNG and JPEG. I will be checking into this more.

I am now using a 50mm 1.4 (manual) for which I am getting used to. I am working on uploading photos of my progress on here, but I mostly post some on my site: https:/mauricemelvimimages.weebly.com (Mods: please let me know if posting the link is not allowed and I will remove it.)

Not sure what to tell you. RAW editing is always processor and memory intensive. It sounds like you might be bumping into one of those two limitations with regard to your phone. Snapseed should work well for RAW processing (again with enough horsepower) and should be among your best options. Lightroom is a big memory hog on mobile (as well as everywhere else) and can be slow when it doesn't have adequate resources. I'm not sure but I believe that RAW image capture and editing may require at least an Adobe ID and possibly an upgrade to the paid version. You also need a recent version of the Android OS to handle RAW images.

 

I don't have any experience with the other software you mentioned so I can't comment on that.

Thank you! I realized that I had to save a copy of the RAW file in LightX as .png; then I can edit in Snapseed or Lightroom. Now I am good to go for posting the best quality of photos.

I posted a pic of a bird and upload the RAW file, converted, and edit it before posting.

Also during this process, I learned how to get the right size for uploading on here.

Lightroom was never free, you can use some basic tools which are also available in any free photo editing apps. If you want to use the pro version you have to pay them.

I guess you can only use it for 7 days for free if you select your paying method. This app is great but it is not free at all. Who told you that light room is free?. With the free version you can only do the basic stuffs.
