My brief absence was due to the build of a brand new PC specificly setup for image processing and ...maybe a few video game :)

Asus Z87Pro Motherboard

  • Bluetooth and wireless connectivity
  • 3.0 USB and 6BGb/s SATA for speed and file transfers

Intel i7 4770K Haswell Processor

16GB RAM

2GB Nvidia GPU

128GB SSD for Boot and Photo-processing software

1TB 6Gb/s SATA Drive for image files

750GB Data Drive

2TB Backup Drive

Two 200mm Fans in a push-pull configuration (front to top) w/ 120mm side exit & 80mm rear exit for cooling.

All stuffed into a Coolermaster 912 HAF Case:

On board video or you haven't installed the video card yet?
Nice clean job though and what kind of monitor are you using?
One more question what kind of power supply and wattage are you using as well as what operating system are you going to install?

While the computer hardware is obviously important, it's often wasted by a poor choice of screen. All the power in the world is overshadowed by a cheap or low quality monitor.

I'm lucky as the imac monitors are very good. But do people building their own kit put effort in to decent displays?

I use the matte screen on my 15" MBP calibrated with a colormunki for rough edits, but the fine tuning is done on my EIZO Coloredge 27" that replaced a LaCie reference blue a year ago. The EIZO is fantastic, 20 minutes from start to precise colour and intensity The LaCie took a bit over an hour...

I'm using a Nvidia 640GT 2GB graphics card ... soon to be Crossfired to be 2 cards for a total of 4GBs split between 2 monitors. I'm currently using a Hannspree 25.5" monitor but I'll be upgrading that when I setup the second graphics card.

The Power supply is an Antec 650W Modular unit and I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium.

Sry for all the questions but I use to be in IT and could see that your system wasn't completed yet. Will your monitor be LED and have a least 2560 by 1440 resolution? Just wondering because I use to have a high powered gaming machine myself and moved to an iMac for photography and am blown away by the iMac screens which are very good for photography. I have a few 24 to 25" led screens for PC and don't find they compare to the iMac screen. But I could see that a person can buy a comparable screen for the PC but they are highly priced.

No worries at all. The pics were from various stages of the build, I applaud your eye in spotting that it was in-progress. :)

I haven't given much thought to the replacement monitor. I know I'll be buying something in the 27" range with an eye towards higher resolution and sub 5ms refresh times. The second monitor is just going to be a 19" HP for file browsing and low priority surfing while I work (ie Netflix LOL)

No worried but Cool, nice rig and was just curious at the rest of the build. I've seen the inside of so many computers it wasn't hard to see the system wasn't complete. I like the WINDOWS 7 you chose, I have 8.1 on my laptop and don't like it. I've always had a higher end machine but used just regular HD LED monitors and when I got my iMac specifically for photography was surprised at the difference in the quality in the screen and difference in photo view. I inquired and the guy at the Apple store told me there was 3 layers of something meshed in the iMac lol I don't know what the refresh rate on the iMac but doesn't matter to me because I don't use it for gaming. Still have a PC that I use sometimes for gaming and the screen has 2ms response time. Not into gaming as much anymore lol

I retired from Battlefield gaming, that was my game.  lol

I started online gaming back in 1999 with the Half Life mod "Team Fortress". 15 years later I'm still playing versions of Half Life games... "Left 4 Dead" is my current real world distraction :)

I started battlefield in 2004 and it was rainbow six raven shield before that in 2003. I haven't played much since my main gaming PC started to die. Then I got into photography, spring 2013 and bought an iMac this last summer and haven't played very much after that.

I got a Macbook Pro today.   Intel Core i7 CPU , 16 GB DDR3 RAM, 512 GB flash storage, dedicated Nvidia graphic processor with 2 GB DDR5 memory, and Retina Display. This think is more powerful then my iMac 27". LOL Quite happy to have something to travel with now.    :)

Sounds pretty close to my MacBook Pro...love it!  Still have to get my wife on a Mac of some sort - hopefully later this year - and then everyone in the family will have one...She has resisted but now sees the value since she already has an iPhone and iPad...

I'm still trying to convince my wife to try a Mac too. She doesn't believe me when I say she'll love the Mac. lol

SWMBO has my old iMac and I use a MBP with i7 quad-core and the matte hi-res screen. I would like one of the new retina MBP-s, but I bought my EIZO screen instead for about the same money...

Eventually I'd like to get a nice external screen for editing, but right now I'm fine with the Retina display and would rather save the money towards photo gear...by the time I get to an external screen, I may not need or want a laptop...I'll just wirelessly connect a nice screen to my tablet and do all my editing that way :)

My wife felt it was a major change to go from her iPhone 4 to a 4S...we are working towards the Mac slowly :)

Choosing between a retina MBP and the screen was not easy. 102% of AdobeRGB calibrated is nice when using ProphotoRGB though...

Got my wife an iMac more than a year ago.

She's now very happy with it, while having resisted for some time to the change to OSX (or lets better say: was accustomed to Windows). While she also likes photography, so got the benefit from having a Retina display, the trigger was that with Windows I had to reinstall her PC about once a year, while Macs that my daughter and myself have been using, have always been working fine.

That is what is slowly converting my wife...she is the only one who complains about performance and other issues...she doesn't care about photography too much other than she's seeing that sharing between devices and others is quite a bit easier when the equipment is standardized a bit...I created and shared some iPhoto galleries which she then has access to on both phone and pad...she loves that as she paints (oil) from photos and then she can have them right on her iPad...
