Hi Folks,

Greetings to all from the highlands of Scotland, which is very much a land of mists and cold, dark mystery this evening.

After a lifetime in the music industry as an orchestral & jazz musician, educator & composer, I've changed direction and I'm working towards a new career as a sports (and other) photographer.

A strange technical problem has developed and I'm hoping that someone might have a solution, or be able to offer advice.

When I use my NIKKOR 80-400mm 1:45-5.6G ED lens with my D500, all is well. It works perfectly shot after shot. However, when I use this lens with my D800 it works perfectly for a dozen shots or so, then the image through the viewfinder or on the live view suddenly goes very dull and dark, the photographs are VERY dark, and they are unusable. If I take the lens off then put it back on all is well, for a dozen shots or so, then the problem happens again....

Merely switching the camera off and on doesn't solve the problem at all, only removing then replacing the lens, which only solves it temporarily, as explained in the previous paragraph.

The lens works perfectly on the D500. Also all my other lenses, all NIKKOR, work perfectly on both cameras, the D500 & the D800.

I don't understand, but I'm hoping that members of the forum might have come across this one before.

Cheers

Hi,

I would investigate about the electric contacts between the lens and the camera.

Aside cleaning the contacts - and considering it is occuring after a few shots taken with a heavier lens - I would also check whether the lens mount on the camera is not (slightly) loose. (I have encountered a similar problem on one of my camera bodies, where a heavy lens had put to much stress on the lens mount, resulting in similar problems)

Hi Jerry, and thanks for your suggestion. There's nothing obvious to the untutored eye. It's suddenly stopped autofocusing with any lens and just this morning the shutter is only working every second time. The shutter count is over 130,000, which is high-ish, although it's not SO high, but I think that I'll take the whole thing in to a repair shop...

Hi Mince,

Indeed, as symptoms have developped, it might be better bringing it to a repairshop for an indepth check.

Let us know what the diagnosis is.

Will do. Thanks for your interest. I live in the sticks but have to travel through Glasgow on Saturday morning. I'll drop it off then...

Cheers
