We met this gull during our vacation in Basque Country. It didn't look frightened by people in any way; some people were taking pictures of it from maybe 50cm.

I had a pair of herring gulls nesting on my top floor balcony for five years, and took lots of pfotos of them and their chicks with my D80. The guy who owns the freehold lives downstairs and objected to the mess on his car, so removed the nest and put obstacles on the balcony to discourage them. Anyway, I've got lots of photos on Flickr:

They were quite friendly and I helped them by rescuiing the chicks on a few occasions - falling out of the nest and once, getting a leg tangled in some twine that was also tangled in a weed.

The presence of an apparent grey film over the images reveals that a
DRL tweak would be beneficial — bringing up details and tonal range.

What do you mean by "DLR tweak"? I'm not familiar with the acronym, I guess it doesn't mean "Doesn't Look Right"? :-)

No (lol), I said
DRL = Dynamic Range Levels = black and white points setting.

I imported your jpg into my converter and got very cool results.

Sorry, I totally forgot to mention the WB tweak!

Oops, next time I'll read 4 times instead of 3 before I reply. :-) I have uploaded new versions which look better to me. I'd like to see your edits however, if you don't mind.

All my bad, I should possibly have written it four times! :)

Much better than mine. I will have to re-calibrate my screen, at least, my white balance is completely off on another screen.

Go slow nono, first, where did you sample your WB reading?

I didn't, just tweaked the WB until it looked right, but it has a strong blue-green cast on another screen whereas yours looks correct.

It should be better now. However your edit has a slight magenta cast on my monitor, who is right?

who is right?

The difficulty is that no one is!!!

Colour perception is not absolute but relative to the viewer's
memory and skills… and good taste.

Ultimately, YOU should be happy with the shot as my input
only meant to ring a bell! :P

It has, and I think the photo is better now. Thank you!
