During recent shoots, memory cards have been showing drastically smaller space available than is actually available. For instance, the camera thinks the card is full when it is less than 20% full, and the number of images that may be taken on a card is unreasonably small, so for shooting a wedding, for instance, I go through cards like crazy. Fortunately, the photos are still saved properly, just not enough of them. Has anyone heard of this issue and if there is a way to resolve it without sending it in for repair?

As joester said: format your cards in camera, that should solve or show the problem.
As for the problem (my guess) when you delete the files on the card, while the card is in a cardreader connected to your computer, don’t forget to empty the trash while the card is still in, otherwise space on your card is not freed
