What is the purpose of the C-N2 adapter (see pic) -- apart from providing a PC port.

In particular, why provide Nikon hotshoe contacts on top for the flash but a single contact on the bottom for the camera? I.e. do the extra contacts do something a single contact would not?

Hot Shoe Adapter to Convert Standard Nikon Hot Shoe to Canon Hot Shoe.

It allows you to use Nikon hot shoe mount flashes (or other accessories) on Canon
cameras. In addition, this adapter allows you to add a PC connection to any camera
or flash that does not come with a built-in PC sync connection, while still retaining
the existing hot shoe functionality (manual mode only, non-TTL).

Will not support TTL flash operation nor provide high-voltage sync protection, and is
not recommended for use with flash units that have a trigger voltage of more than 6V.

Thank you.

But couldn't that all be accomplished with just one contact on the flash side?

What purpose is served by providing three extra contacts?

The two brands did not share the same function to pin
standard so it was to make sure it was taking over the
conversion.

I think there have been one or two Nikon speedlights that don't give full exposure control unless it is mounted on a Nikon. One of the comms pins is connected to ground to let the flash know everything is right.
