Earlier rumours stated that it (the D400) would be released in Sep/Oct 2013 timeframe. We are now in Nov. What's happening, does anyone have an update??

Maybe at the CP+ show in January/February? Or maybe never? Depends on how big the pro APS-C market still is for NIkon...

The D7100 is a pretty great camera. The D400 would have to be really compelling. Maybe they don't think there is enough of a market for the D400,

Stronger rumours of a Canon 7DmkII are around now, for 1st half of 2014. Hopefully nIkon will try to match it.

Yep, but it isn't a D300s as far as controls, speed and buffer go.

I am aware, but the 7100 is almost as fast. The buffer fills up because of the large files, but I wonder, with the decreased DSLR sales, if Nikon thinks the D400 is worth while. The D7100 is a very competent DSLR. Other than in the sensor department, it's better than my D600.

Will be interesting to see if this is unvailed after Christmas as the New Nikon product for Spring next year.

I want the pro build etc, I also want the crop, so don't want to go full frame, I would like to see a built in grip , I use a Nikon grip on my 300s now and would never take it off (my wildlife lens collection go up to 600mm vr2 ) I like a big camera.
For me its the DX upgrade or I have to go full frame (D4 my only option for my needs, but that's a lot of money to have to try and find). lets see what canon comes out with in the new year.
Come on Nikon you know what we want .

Personally, I would prefer to upgrade to an FX full frame camera such as the D-610. I don't think Nikon is interested in prolonging the advanced level DX camera's so we might never see a D-400.

I'm not sure a D400 is even necessary anymore. With the FX cameras having the DX Lens Compatibility Mode (1x body will mate with a 1.5x lens in a "crop mode") it seems redundant. The D7100 even has this feature (1.5x becomes 2X and the FPS jumps up from 6 to 7). I'd actually be more interested in an FX body with a LARGER DING-DANG BUFFER that worked with DX lenses. Seriously, on board RAM is so cheap!
A dream setup would roughly be:
FX Body with DX crop-mode
30MP FX
20MP DX
4 or 5 FPS in FX
8 - 10 FPS DX
20 RAW + Jpg buffer depth with class 10 or higher card
