I have an iMac, bought in 2013, still running OSX 10.8.4.  I have a Nikon D800E camera.  I use Nikon View NX2 version 2.8.2.  I have used NX2 version 2.8.2 for 6 years without a problem. I am not on the Internet and have never be on the Internet with my Mac. Then suddenly it would not open anymore.  (the only thing I could think I did wrong was I was coping photos between to external hard drives and I forgot to close NX2 first.  I Got an error message “ViewNX 2 quit unexpectedly, click to reopen.  When I tried to open ViewNX2,  I still got the error message again.  I clicked, it did not reopen.  There is a big text box full of lines of computer problem details and sys configuration.  I called Nikon and got a cut and dry fix of uninstalling and going to Nikon Site to download new software.  (The answer is still out as to which version of NX2 or NXi I can get and how much I have to update my iMac OSX to get it.  I called Apple and they said the same thing, but said I could get ViewNX2 2.10.3 if I updated my OSX to 10.8.5.  I called our local computer store and they said (which helped) that a program can corrupt and that is like a break that can not be fixed, so you would have to reinstall the program.   I have an appointment all set up.  I consulted my book on Mountain Lion OSX(“OSX Mountain Lion the missing manual”), which covers OSX 10.8.  It suggested things you could try first, before having to reinstall.  One of them was make a test account and try opening the program through the test account.  I already put a test account on my iMac!  View NX2 opened using my test account!

I could run NX2 now through my test account, but if I wanted to try and fix it through my own account… the book goes on to say, you can then move your own corrupted application’s preference file to the trash (but don’t empty the trash) and then try opening View NX2 through your account.  This would force View NX2 to build a new preference file.  And then NX2 might open.  I went looking for the preference file for NX2 under my home account, not under overall hard drives (there are two different preference folders on a Mac). Which is what the book said to do.

The problem is that there are two different preference files ( .plist) for View NX2 at…Home > Library > Preference folder, and I don’t know which one to move to the trash or move both.  This is one of the questions that is being sent to higher ups at Nikon. But if they don’t answer, I thought I would try here also.

Nikon .plist files in Home > Library > Preference folder:

com.nikon.NKFramework.Common.plist

com.nikon.NKFramework.Nikon Trasfer 2.plist

com.nikon.NKFramework.ViewNX2.plist

com.nikon.PictureControl.plist

there is also:

jp.co.nikon.Nikon Message Center 2.plist

jp.co.nikon.Nikon Transfer 2.plist

jp.co.nikon.ViewNX2.plist

there is also:

  Nikon Transfer 2

                 Transfer001.plist

      Nikon_Shared.xml

Which should I try moving?  If you still can't open NX2 after it builds a new preference file, you would have to install a new nikon software version.

So can you tell me your opinion of this and which file to move to the trash, or should I not move anything to the trash (and not risk my being able to run NX2 through my test account)?  And do you have the low down on which NX2 application (preferred) I can download from Nikon(or NXi) and what Mac operation system I would have to have to do it?  I don’t now want to update my Mac’s operating system to anything too recent because I would have to update all the installed programs I have on my Mac and I would have to run Photoshop & Lightroom through subscription.  I’d like to keep away from that for awhile longer.  What is the best route?  I would prefer to fix or keep my View NX2 ver 2.8.2 if I can.

Thank You for any help, very much

Thank You

Sandy

Rename the .plists instead of moving them to trash. This will force a .plist rebuild just like removing it, but is safely reversible. Temporarily moving things to trash isn't a good idea. You can make a folder somewhere and move the .plist there if you are uncomfortable renaming it. When the .plist has been rebuilt and the software works again, you can throw the renamed or temporarily moved .plist away.

As it works using the test account, it is one of the .plists in the home account that is suspect.

I would not know how to rename a plist...to anything?  So I just move both .plist to another holding folder and then try opening Nikon View NX2 again?  I move both out?  Thank You I have no idea.  Thank You so much for the help.

Thank You,
