I am reasonably experienced in film SLR's (like Canon A-1), The D3500  is my first  DSLR. The learning curve is quite steep, even with the book by Busch.

I am trying to use the D3500 with the YongNuo YN685 with i-TTL and HSS.

I would like to start out with simple auto everything,

How do I set the camera so that its built-in flash does not pop up, yet the YN685 still does its auto thing?

I am the OP.

The combo seems to be working OK now in full auto for both.

I suspect I didn't have the flash foot in full proper contact with the camera shoe. The contacts are pretty small.
