I have photos on my hard disk that start with DSCN like DSCN0037 which I took with my old P520 camera. I now have a P900 but the files have the same name. Is there any way other than being careful what folder I put them in to avoid overwritng files?

I think it might only be the DSLRs that allow that. Most computer operating systems will warn you before you overwrite anything. On the other hand, if you put the images in a folder by date, you should never encounter a problem.

As already mentioned, putting the pictures to separate folders will avoid conflicts.
If you want to bulk rename however the pictures, f.i. coming from the P520 you can do so on a computer. The operation varies however with the operating system. Here are two ways of doing:
- for OSX (Mac)
How to rename multiple files at once on Mac | iMore
- for Windows (PC)
How to batch rename multiple files on Windows 10 | Windows Central
