Why do you need a 6'+ tripod? The head builds 3-4" and the finder is 2-3" above that, so if you are 5'10 you need a tripod that is 5'5 worst case to be able to stand straight. Prices rise exponentially as soon as you need or want longer legs.
I would look for a set of legs and a head separately as a manufacturer that makes one well usually don't for the other. When shopping for a head, make sure that it as Arca-Swiss compatible as that dovetail is a de facto standard.

I agree with Peter...I would recommend two separate devices - a tripod and a monopod. Both very useful but not really interchangeable. A tripod is not a good choice for sports. In fact, it can be a danger to you and the athletes since it is no where near as easy to move out of the way as a monopod. That said, a monopod doesn't provide the same level of sturdiness when you are shooting a stationary subject.

To add to the confusion, there are some tripod systems that allow you to remove one leg and convert it to a monopod. They can be handy in a pinch but they can also be clumsy.
I do agree wholeheartedly with the suggestion to standardize your quick change system to Arca-Swiss compatibility. And avoid buying tripod/head combinations unless the combo is just right. Many of us have blown through a number of tripods and heads over the years in an attempt to save a few bucks which often fails miserably. So, my suggestion would be to buy the best that you can afford at the outset.
