Just wondering -- are you taking these shots handheld, or with a tripod?  What is your shutter speed?

Your pictures are converting me . . .

All my Zoo shots are hand held. Heck the majority of my shots are handheld. I haven't done much tripod work yet. Only for a few landscape shots so far.

Good to know! And your settings in general? Do you need to go to faster than 1/500 shutter speed?

If I'm shooting aperture priority I usually set it to 1/125 or 1/250 depending on what I'm shooting.

The Meerkats are cool... I wanted to try and shoot them with my new Sigma 150mm Macro F2.8 but sadly on that day they weren't playing ball. I will definitely go back and see what I can achieve.

Much better than my zoo photos, great work.  Why will the animals show me no emotion?

Patience is the key...

True, but that's hard to manage, with a 3 year old riding on your shoulders, while you shoot one handed.  I'm there for my kids first and for photography, a distant 2nd, maybe third.  Perhaps when they're in high school ;).  Though I am not looking forward to the day they don't want me around anymore.

Well that's different... in your case you're relying on luck ;)

For some stupid reason my browser is not letting me upload more photos... You can check out one of the colour shots on my Flickr account...

Great shots Rocknrumble!

Kenafein - wait until they start school and then take a weekday trip on your own or with a friend!  My buddy and I used to go to the zoo every April on a weekday.  Warm enough for us and cool enough that the animals were fairly active.  We would spend the entire day shooting.  We took all of our gear - tripods and all - and just took our time to get the right shots...

Now I really want to do the same this coming spring if I can get some time!  With one graduating high school and the other in college, I have few if any days that I can take off just for me!
