I can't get the SB-5000's AF assist illuminator (the red beam on the flash) to come on with my Z7. I always switch off the AF assist on the camera bodies (to bright and annoying to people) but the (infra?)red beam on the flash is super helpful. Less annoying and it actually makes an X pattern that the cameras can lock in on in total darkness even if you were trying to focus on a subject with no contrast. Nikon tech support spent a lot of time with me trying to figure it out and came to the conclusion that, on the Z series cameras the camera's AF assist must override the one on the flash. They weren't real confident about it themselves though. On all the other Nikon DSLR's & flashes I've had, the red beam on the flash works when the AF Assist on the body is off. It seems really odd that they'd eliminate a nice option on the new camera. Any advice??
